CCL: a tracking app for people with menstrual cycles

Product Design for Calendar and Data Display

several phone screens with screenshots of the ccl product on a peach background

Overview

CCL is an app meant to track menstrual and ovulation cycles with the goal of helping everyone with their monthly tracking needs. Whether a person wants to become pregnant, is hoping to avoid pregnancy, or just wants to track their menstrual cycle the CCL app will help.

Problem

The goal of this design was to bring out a playful, warm, and comfortable side to the menstrual cycle. They wanted to help those with periods find peace in an app that can track it for you.

The client wished to avoid something too juvenile or something that looked too much like other period tracking apps on the market. They also needed the app to work for several different user groups. Although their primary user group is women looking to become pregnant, they also wanted their app to work for women looking to avoid pregnancy via tracking, and those who just wish to track their cycle.

CCL already had an existing app, and an existing client base, so it was also important to update functionality without confusing existing users. Their existing app was lacking any styling, as they had only been using it with user groups to find data and test their system.

Main Takeaway: a new, playful, comfortable, and feminine style was needed immediately for their product.

Iterations

Initial hifi design iterations (above). Second pass design iterations (right).

High Fidelity Mockups

Designed in Figma, the overall design features a softer color palette. While it’s very feminine we wanted to avoid it being too juvenile, opting for an orange/pink scheme rather than an entirely pink scheme. The color palette was extremely important to get right. The green from the background elements also appears in many buttons to be able to diversify the styling for many types of buttons and alerts.

While the full design mockups are not available to showcase due to the company’s request, I have pulled in several of the designed screens into a separate mock-up for viewing.

The most important element, and the element we started with was the homepage and period tracking form itself.

On the homepage the calendar needed to have several different color options with different meanings for each one. In a normal period tracker there might only be the colors for the current day and then for the period itself, with slight variations for light/regular/heavy bleeding. I included all three colors in the pink variation. For this app we also needed to include ovulation days so that those trying to get pregnant or trying to avoid pregnancy could get that additional functionality. I opted for the orange color to help differentiate it from the menstrual cycle. The current day I changed both shape and color to differentiate it from the other elements.

The phase tracker was the next most important element for those trying to get pregnant. It can be turned on/off in the settings depending on the user, since those using this as only a cycle tracker will have little use for the phases.

Below that it was important that the tracking was easy to access from the homepage since that was the primary functionality of the app. So I created the button “Enter Today’s Symptoms.” The client requested the wording of this button, so I tried to make it as clear as possible that it was a button and that it was important on the homepage.

Unchained: An atypical fashion brand focused on purses and shoes

Website Design That Pioneers Trending Design

Overview

Unchained is a small business that sells interesting and affordable designer handbags. They wanted a website that would catch the eye of the Gen Z crowd and push the envelope on the trending styles in design.

Detail image of the website design section for an additional descriptive section of the site titled Your Fashion is as Unique as Your Fingerprint.

Problem

Unchained is really geared toward the Gen Z market and they needed a site that would reflect that. They wanted something that was extremely fashion forward and reflective of what you might see in magazines. It needed to be as stylish as the bags they sell. They wanted a lot of movement and motion throughout the site.

My initial thought was a collage style that is trending. The primary issue with a style like this is the difficulty between readability/usability and style. It becomes very easy to overwhelm a user if this style isn’t done carefully. The other issue was the motion. To create responsivity in such a intense style means a lot of carefully crafted sections utilizing formulaic css that would display properly at all screen types. It also meant that we needed to be careful with load times.

Captivating Gen Z: How Our Web Design Agency Helped Unchained Create an Eye-Catching Website for Designer Handbags

Unchained is a small business that sells super cool designer handbags. They wanted a website that would catch the eye of the Gen Z crowd, so they hired our web design agency to make it happen. Our team got to work creating an affordable, custom website that would show off their bags while being easy and fun to use.

First things first, we did some research on what Gen Z were into. We learned that they loved bright colors, a mix of photo and illustration, and anything with interesting animations. So, our designers worked together with Unchained to create a unique aesthetic that would appeal to this younger demographic while utilizing Unchained’s existing branding. It turned out amazing, really showing off the true vibe of Unchained.

We also made sure that the website was easy to use on all types of devices. Our team utilized responsive web design techniques to ensure that the website would look great on everything from smartphones to desktops. It’s very important to have a site that looks great no matter what device someone is using to browse the internet these days.

And we didn’t stop there! We also made sure that the website was super easy to use. No confusing menus or hard-to-find pages here! Our team put together an exciting layout that showcased Unchained’s products in a visually appealing way. Plus, we added a video that shows just how awesome these bags really are.

To make sure that Unchained’s website would be easy to find on Google, we did some SEO magic. We wanted to make sure that Unchained’s website was easily discoverable on all search engines. So our team conducted keyword research to identify the most relevant keywords for Unchained’s products and included them throughout the website. We also optimized the website’s content and metadata to ensure that it would rank well on search engine results pages. That way, when people search for designer handbags, Unchained would show up right at the top of the search results!

Of course, we also wanted to make it easy for people to buy bags on Unchained’s website. E-commerce web design is important to get right. We worked closely with Unchained to create a website that would allow them to showcase their products and make it easy for users to make purchases. We included a shopping cart feature that allowed users to add items to their cart and checkout seamlessly. We also included a contact form that users could use to get in touch with Unchained’s customer support team.

Our graphic design team played a big role in this project. They created a variety of illustrations and graphics that were used throughout the website to create a cohesive and visually stunning aesthetic. Plus, they helped out with the animations, making the website feel more unique and engaging. And our web development team put everything together. The web development team was responsible for bringing the design to life. They utilized both front-end and back-end development techniques to create a website that was not only visually appealing but also functional and easy to use. They worked closely with the design team to ensure that the website was responsive and that all of the animations and graphics worked seamlessly.

In the end, we created a totally unique website that perfectly captured the spirit of Unchained. It was such a fun project, and we’re so happy with how it turned out!

Emerging Women: A Global Leadership Company Focused on Women Leaders

Leading Website Operations and Developing Design Systems

Overview

Emerging Women is a global leadership company. Their focus is on helping Women become better leaders. With an ethos of authenticity, consciousness and connection, their mission is to support our learning, create collaboration that integrates feminine leadership into all we do, and help catalyze our vision for a thriving future.

Problem

Emerging Women has had a multitude of projects for me over the 3 years I’ve worked for them. As a specialist with their website operations we’ve gone through many functionality issues and dev errors to have the project we have today. The primary project I’ve worked through with them was their full site redesign that involved an extreme amount of user mapping and user research to find the right solutions to each of the problems of functionality from the previous site to the new one.

As lead of website operations I was not the sole designer on this project and was also in charge of taking a designer who was not experienced in web design to create designs that I could develop. This designer was the primary point of contact with what the CEO wanted, which also created challenges. The primary challenge was to adjust several user journeys and balance functionality with the requested designs of the CEO and an less experienced designer.

Balaeyon: A Black-Owned Beauty Brand

How Web Design Impacts Sales Growth

Overview

Balaeyon is a beauty brand with a primary product called the Dew Revive. Focused on sustainability, Balaeyon takes beauty products to a new level. As a black-owned, women-owned business, Balaeyon exists to push the beauty industry forward.

Screenshot of a piece of the Balaeyon website design with Baleyon and Sustainability as the section focused on.

Problem

Balaeyon is a beauty startup that initially only needed an exceptional website that showcased its products to the world. As they grew and went with a different e-commerce platform than they had originally gone with, they rehired me to redesign their site on the new platform. As they were dealing with features in major publications I needed to focus most heavily on having a user experience that would result in sale, while ensuring the brand still looked like Balaeyon.

Main takeaways: Balancing the the brand with functionality and creating effective sales funnels through use of CTAs.

Stunning Beauty Website Design | Balaeyon | Charcoal Grey Design Co.

Balaeyon is a beauty startup that needed an exceptional website that showcased its products to the world. As a web design agency, Charcoal Grey Design Co. was excited to take on the challenge. Our goal was to create a website that represented the brand’s vision and mission while also providing an excellent user experience. We ensured that the website had an aesthetically pleasing design and intuitive navigation, providing a seamless shopping experience to visitors.

To meet Balaeyon’s request of “no straight lines”, we designed the website with a curvy and flowing design. We incorporated the use of fluid shapes, organic curves, and soft lines to create a modern, elegant and unique look. Our team used different design elements such as gradients, patterns, and textures to bring Balaeyon’s brand to life.

The website was built on Shopify, a popular ecommerce platform that offers flexibility, functionality and scalability to businesses. Shopify provides features like a secure checkout system, easy payment options, shipping integrations, and inventory management tools that ensure smooth website functionality. We used Shopify to create a beautiful store that complemented Balaeyon’s brand identity.

The website design used aqua blue and gold colors to create a refined aesthetic that matched Balaeyon’s brand identity. We made sure to maintain brand consistency throughout the site using the brand’s logo, color scheme, and typography. We added white space to balance the bold design choices, providing a clean, elegant and contemporary look.

SEO is a crucial aspect of web design, and we made sure to incorporate it into the design process. We optimized the website for search engines by adding appropriate meta titles, descriptions, keywords, and alt tags to improve the site’s visibility. We also ensured that the site had a responsive design that performed well across various devices, enhancing the user experience and increasing the website’s chances of ranking well on search engines.

UI/UX is an essential element of web design, and we took it seriously when designing Balaeyon’s website. We created an easy-to-use interface that provided a seamless shopping experience to visitors. We also incorporated a clear hierarchy of information that made it easy for customers to navigate the site. The website’s design had a clear call to action, guiding visitors to take the desired action.

The homepage was designed to create a bold first impression that would catch the visitors’ attention. We used high-quality images of Balaeyon’s products, with a clear call to action to shop. The site navigation was designed to be easy to use, with all the important pages accessible from the top navigation bar. We also ensured that the website had a fast loading speed to prevent visitors from losing interest and leaving the site.

The product pages were designed to showcase Balaeyon’s products in the best possible light. We used high-quality images, with clear descriptions and pricing information. We also added reviews to the product pages, so customers could see what others thought of the products. We made sure that the products were easy to find, with a search bar and clear categorization of products.

The checkout process was designed to be as seamless as possible. We wanted to make sure that customers could easily complete their purchase without any unnecessary steps or distractions. We ensured that the checkout page was secure, with various payment options, a guest checkout option and an automatic shipping calculator.

We added a blog to the site to help Balaeyon create a stronger connection with her audience. The blog was designed to be visually appealing, with a clear layout and easy-to-read typography. We also made sure to add social sharing buttons to the blog posts so readers could easily share them on social media.

In conclusion, the creation of Balaeyon’s website was an incredible project that we thoroughly enjoyed working on. We were able to bring our expertise in web design and development to create a unique, beautiful, and functional website that exceeded our client’s expectations. Our team’s commitment to detail, creativity, and user experience helped us achieve our goal of creating an exceptional website that truly represented Balaeyon’s brand.
